Squash, Chayote

Chayote squash is a fruit belonging to the Curcurbitacea family which also includes melons and cucumbers. It has a fairly neutral flavor, so it is often used as a carrier for spices and flavors in dishes.

More commonly known in Southern parts of the United States as a mirliton, this gourd can be eaten raw or cooked and is popular among Creole dishes. The majority of the fruit is actually water and fiber, so it helps you feel full without over consuming. The fiber content aids in gastrointestinal relief and lowers blood pressure. Chayote is a good source of vitamin C which is necessary for building a strong immunity and building collagen.
